Building a playful environment that complements learning

The See Saw Do Placemakers Club is an initiative that encourages the learners of the Zonnebloem College Estate to be part of the process of re-imagining their school grounds and to be hands-on involved during each project’s process, progress and implementation.
Working in collaboration with The Chris Otto Foundation and the stakeholders of the Zonnebloem College Estate, we’ve collectively identified the need for stimulating play environments and sports
facilities that can accommodate various extra-curricular programmes. By including students in the design
and implementation of playful spatial upgrade projects we hope it will build pride, grow environmental ownership, character and responsible citizenship.
There is ample opportunity for funders and corporate teams
to be part of these developments

Partnering with See Saw Do & Project Zonnebloem
The Zonnebloem College estate is home to Zonnebloem Boys’ Primary School, Zonnebloem Girls Primary School, Zonnebloem Nest Senior School and the Children’s Art Centre. Through partnering with See Saw Do’s Placemaking at Zonnebloem project, you will be serving hundreds of children who operate on the
estate property on a daily basis.
We believe that children have a valuable contribution to make towards designing infrastructural interventions, and by including them in the design process, a sense of pride and ownership for their environment is nurtured. This is a rare opportunity to shape the beautiful estate grounds into
a space that nurtures children’s curiosity, energy, willingness to learn and most importantly
encouraging them to learn and grow their own sense of self through playing!

About Play Tables

There are not many shady spots on the playground for learners to recline and relax under. We noticed a trend of children huddling underneath little-shaded areas to seek refuge from the sun’s heat. The Play Tables are conveniently located underneath a cluster of trees.
The Play Table Area is designed to be a long-lasting, multi-use, playable public space. Each table top hosts a different game, ranging from Mankala to Chess, that can be played simply by using stones collected from the "pool of pebbles" surrounding the tables. The selection of games will encourage a variety of interactions - ranging from collaboration, critical thinking, mathematical skills, strategic planning and social cooperation.
The table tops were crafted through hosting workshops where they participated and spectated the layered cement casting process. The table tops have been fitted to their bases on the custom built raised surface and the only element left to add is the ceramic game tiles that are currently in production!

About the Performance Space

By communicating freely with the voice, face, and body, children learn to express ideas with confidence, empathise with others from different cultures and backgrounds, and feel at home in their own skin. Song, music, performance and dance can help children become more imaginative, self-aware and collaborative citizens. By adding a simple raised platform, we can encourage performative play!
The vision for the performance space is grounding the stage with a mural background, as well as a raised area covered in grass for the audience to sit or it can serve as an additional performance area. The stage area can be complemented by adding permanent musical instruments. On top of this space benefitting children during free play and after school periods, MusicWorks, an organisation that runs various performance and music workshops with the learners can use this environment
as an additional teaching space.

About the Grade R Classroom

This project is scoped to be co-designed with the Grade R teacher early in 2019. The following is a short description of the area and exciting things in the pipeline. Elements we hope to incorporate is a mural overlooking the play area, astroturf or grass, planters and greenery. The goal is to create a friendly and happy looking environment for the little learners who play there on a daily basis.

About Us

See Saw Do was born in 2010, from co-founder Xanele Puren's final year project,
studying Visual Communication Design.
During the past 8 years, we have grown from a design studio that focuses on transforming child environments with customised mural designs and re-imagined interiors to a studio that now focuses on holistic spatial and environment design, place-making, children's workshops, illustration and facilitating co-design events.
Our core team is made up of Jeremy, Xanelé and Luke (as well as co-workers wirehair terrier Phoebe and the big boss #awesomeBOBcat). We're a tight-knit team that subcontracts and collaborates with various stakeholders according to each project's needs.
We look forward to meeting and working with you :)
